Samuel Merrick is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and serves as the Medical Director of the Center for Special Studies, the Adult HIV Clinic at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine with over 20 years of experience caring for patients with HIV infection. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the New York State DOH AIDS Institute Medical Care Criteria Committee. Dr. Merrick received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at The New York Hospital.
At the completion of this educational session, learners will:
- Understand the new recommendations from the New York State DOH AIDS Institute Medical Criteria Committee for immunologic and virologic monitoring of patients with HIV disease.
- Know the difference between virologic failure and transient viremia (“blips”).
- Appreciate factors, other than monitoring intervals, that may be associated with virologic failure in previously suppressed patients.
- Be aware of the potential benefits of longer monitoring intervals.
