Joel Palefsky is an internationally recognized expert on the molecular biology, treatment, pathogenesis and natural history of anogenital human papillomavirus infections, particularly in the setting of HIV infection. He is the Director of the world's first clinic devoted to prevention of anal cancer, the Anal Neoplasia Clinic at the UCSF Cancer Center. He has pioneered diagnostic and treatment methods for anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) and has been an advocate for screening and treatment of AIN in high-risk populations to prevent anal cancer. He is the chair of the HPV Working Group of the U.S. National Cancer Institute-supported AIDS Malignancy Consortium. He founded and leads the HIV-related Malignancies Research Group at UCSF. He is the founder and immediate past president of the International Anal Neoplasia Society and is the current president of the International Papillomavirus Society. He is principal investigator of the ANal Cancer/HSIL Outcomes Research (ANCHOR) study and is the author of over 280 publications.
At the completion of this educational session, learners will:
- Understand the current epidemiology of anal cancer, pre-cancer and HPV infection in HIV-positive individuals.
- Be aware of current methods for prevention of anal cancer in HIV-positive individuals.
- Know the design and rational for, and current status of, the Anal Cancer/HSIL Outcomes Research (ANCHOR) study.
