Dr. Robert Kaner is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Genetic Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He was the project leader of an NIH-sponsored study of the molecular basis of accelerated emphysema development in HIV-1 positive smokers, which was part of a Specialized Center of Clinically Oriented Research for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Dr Kaner is now Principal Investigator for a pilot study of doxycycline for COPD and emphysema in HIV-1+ individuals, and Principal Investigator of the Weill-Cornell site of the National Institute of Health (NIH)-sponsored Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Clinical Research Network.
At the completion of this educational session, learners will:
- Be able to describe the lung manifestations of HIV, including opportunistic infections, conventional pneumonias, lung cancers, pulmonary hypertension and COPD.
- Know how the effects of HIV on the lung have changed from the pre-HAART era to the present.
- Understand the diagnostic criteria for COPD and emphysema.
