Dr. Palefsky completed his undergraduate medical training and training in Internal Medicine at McGill University and completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Stanford University in 1989. He then joined the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco, where he remains to this day. He is an internationally recognized expert on the molecular biology, treatment, pathogenesis and natural history of anogenital human papillomavirus infections, particularly in the setting of HIV infection. He is the Director of the world's first clinic devoted to prevention of anal cancer, the Anal Neoplasia Clinic at the UCSF Cancer Center. He has pioneered diagnostic and treatment methods for anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) and has been an advocate for screening and treatment of AIN in high-risk populations to prevent anal cancer. He is the chair of the HPV Working Group of the U.S. National Cancer Institute supported AIDS Malignancy Consortium. He founded and leads the HIV-related Malignancies Research Group at UCSF. He is the founder of the newly established International Anal Neoplasia Society and is the president-elect of the International Papillomavirus Society.
At the completion of this educational session, learners will:
- Understand the current epidemiology of anal cancer in HIV-positive and HIV-negative men and women.
- Know the role of HPV vaccination as a primary preventive method for anal cancer.
- Appreciate the role of HPV vaccination in HIV-positive men and women.
- Be aware of the current status of secondary prevention efforts for anal cancer in high-risk populations.

The target audience is all physicians, NPs and PAs involved or interested in HIV education.
